IT recruitment activity in Canada’s tech industry drops 9.5% in June 2022

Canada’s technology industry saw a 9.5% decline in IT hiring activity in June 2022 compared to the previous month, according to GlobalData’s Job Analytics database.

Overall industry hiring was down 8.74% in June 2022 compared to May 2022.

Of the total tech industry hiring activity, IT jobs claimed a 30.19% share in June 2022, down 0.35% from the average share for the past three months.

Top 5 Job Classifications in Canadian Tech Industry IT Recruitment Activity in June 2022

Of the total number of job titles, the top five roles accounted for 99.46% of the Canadian tech industry’s overall IT recruitment activity in June 2022.

1) Software and web developers, programmers and testers recorded a share of 63.48% in June 2022, registering a decrease of 2.77% compared to the previous month.

2) Database and network administrators and architects claimed a share of 11.51%, down 3.41% from the prior month.

3) Computer and information analysts held an 11.15% share, down 16.55% from May 2022.

4) Miscellaneous IT occupations captured a share of 8.58%, up 4.4% from the previous month.

Top five tech companies in IT recruitment activity in Canada in June 2022

The top five companies, by number of jobs tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average growth of 14.42% in share of overall Canadian tech industry IT recruitment activity in June 2022 compared to compared to May 2022.

Telus posted 195 IT jobs in June 2022 and was down 7.14% from the previous month, followed by Cognizant Technology Solutions with 153 jobs and growth of 15,200%. CGI Group with 131 IT jobs and BCE with 128 jobs, recorded a growth of 7.38% and a decline of 10.49%, respectively, while Open Text recorded a decline of 24.07% with 123 job offers in June 2022.

Junior-level job openings dominate in June 2022

Junior-level jobs held a share of 60.95%, down 8.23% from May 2022. Mid-level positions, with a share of 27.27%, saw an increase of 12.27 % compared to the previous month.

In third place were entry-level vacancies with 11.24% market share, down 24.09% from May 2022, while senior vacancies accounted for 0.54%, registering a monthly decrease of 14.29%.
